Atomic Habits: A Whole-Book Map

James Clear's Atomic Habits distilled to its skeleton: two foundations, one habit loop, and the four laws, with a deep-dive link for every idea in the book.

You do not rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your systems. Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement. A 1% daily edge multiplies enormously over a year.

This is the entry point to the whole series. The book is really just two foundations + one loop + four laws. Everything else hangs off that.

Two Foundations

The Backbone: The Habit Loop → Four Laws

Every habit runs the same loop; each law treats one stage → The Habit Loop: Backbone of the Four Laws:

Cue make it obvious Craving make it attractive Response make it easy Reward make it satisfying problem phase: notice, want · solution phase: act, get the result one loop, four laws · the reward feeds the next cue
Every habit runs the same loop; each law treats one stage.
StageBuild a good habit (positive law)Break a bad one (inversion)
CueMake it obvious → Law 1Make it invisible
CravingMake it attractive → Law 2Make it unattractive
ResponseMake it easy → Law 3Make it difficult
RewardMake it satisfying → Law 4Make it unsatisfying

Supporting techniques: temptation bundling, the dopamine mechanism, the right tribe, the two-minute rule, willpower is scarce, and never miss twice.

Staying With It / Mastery

Once the good habit exists, the real problem starts:

My Own Practice (coming soon)

Real cases of landing the book on my own tools are still being written: a habit-tracking setup in TickTick, an “inevitability” environment built with a handover plugin, and splitting context across separate YouTube accounts. Coming bit by bit.

Start with the first foundation → Systems Beat Goals.
