Temptation Bundling: Sandwich the Need-To in the Middle
The most efficient use of willpower is not using it. Anchor the habit you need to one you already crave. The after / do / only-then formula that lands Law 2.
The most efficient use of willpower is not using it at all. Borrow a behavior you’re “already doing and want to do,” and slot the thing you should do inside it.
The formula:
After [current habit] → do [the habit I need] → only then [the habit I want].
- Example: before opening Netflix (want), walk 10 minutes on the treadmill (need).
- The key: anchor to an existing behavior and borrow its momentum to pull the need-to along. This is the most practical way to land Law 2 (“make it attractive”).
Don’t drag it with willpower, tow it with an existing craving.
